The second season starts out with Dexter having trouble killing due to constant surveillance from Sgt. Doakes. When Dexter finally gets some alone time, he has trouble executing his kill since he is still haunted by what he was forced to do at the end of the first season. To make matters worse, divers find, the bodies of Dexter's past victims and give this serial killer the name of "The Bay Harbour Butcher". The relationship with Rita becomes tenser, as Rita is forced to deal with her husbands' death. She accuses Dexter of setting up her husband and assumes that Dexter is a heroin addict. Rather the admitting that he is a serial killer, Dexter instead is forced to join a rehabilitation program. Here, Dexter meets Lila, who takes him on a number of intense adventures. Now, Dexter has two problems to deal with, both Lila and the fact that what he does is no longer under the radar.
