Harry Morgan, played by James Remar, is a former homicide detective for the Miami Metro Police Department. He is Dexter's adoptive father, and also the first to notice Dexter's homicidal tendencies. At first, Harry tries to control Dexter's urges by taking him hunting. Realizing that Dexter's needs are growing ramped, Harry teaches Dexter to be more constructive and use his impulses to deliver justice to the world. This list of rules is referred to as "The code of Harry". Having to pay so much attention to Dexter, Harry at times neglected to give equal attention to Debra. Although a good person, Harry also kept a few secrets, such as the fact that he had an affair with Dexter's birth mother, who was a CI. Harry died from coronary artery disease when Dexter was nineteen.
